- Lighter and more manageable than 200x75mm sleepers — easier to cut, move, and install without machinery
- Cost-effective option for large garden bed projects where multiple pieces are needed
- H3 treatment provides long-term weather protection without the cost premium of H4 or hardwood
- Consistent dimensions make it easy to stack, stack-cut, and join for raised bed or retaining applications
- Natural timber appearance blends with garden environments — accepts paint, stain, and sealant
- Sustainably sourced plantation pine — a renewable timber product
The main difference is thickness. The 200x50mm sleeper is 50mm thick (about the width of two fingers), while the 200x75mm is 75mm thick and substantially heavier. The 200x50mm is better suited for lightweight landscaping work like garden edging, raised beds, and single-course borders. If you are building a retaining wall with more than 2–3 courses, or retaining significant soil load, the 200x75mm or a hardwood sleeper will provide greater structural strength.
H3 is an Australian timber treatment classification. It means the timber has been pressure-impregnated with preservative to protect it from decay, termite attack, and fungal growth when used above ground in an outdoor, weather-exposed environment. H3 is the minimum treatment level required by Australian standards for outdoor timber not in direct ground contact. For timber that will be buried in soil or submerged in water, H4 or H5 treatment is required.
Yes, for low retaining walls. The 200x50mm sleeper is suitable for garden bed edges and retaining walls up to 2–3 courses high where soil pressure is minimal. For taller walls, walls retaining heavy soil loads, or any wall that needs engineering approval, a thicker sleeper or concrete sleeper is the appropriate choice. If you are unsure which product suits your project, call us on +61 420 869 628.
No. H3 treated pine is rated for above-ground, weather-exposed use only. It is not rated for direct in-ground contact. If your sleepers will be buried in soil, sitting on wet ground, or used in a high-moisture environment, you will need H4 treated pine or hardwood sleepers. We stock both — see our full timber range.
It depends on the size of your garden bed and how many courses (layers) high you want it. For a single-course raised bed using 200x50mm sleepers:
- 1.2m × 2.4m bed = 2 sleepers (2 × 2.4m pieces cut to form the rectangle)
- 2.4m × 2.4m bed = 4 sleepers (no cutting required)
For a two-course raised bed, double the quantity. If you tell us the dimensions of your bed and the height you want, we can calculate the exact number for you — call or email us.
Choose 2400mm if your garden bed or retaining wall runs in spans of 2.4m or less, as this avoids waste and unnecessary cutting. Choose 3000mm if your layout requires longer spans or if you want to minimise the number of joins in a long retaining run. Both lengths are the same price per lineal metre at our current pricing.
Yes, but allow the timber to dry out before applying paint or stain. Freshly treated pine has a high moisture content and surface treatments may not adhere well until the timber has weathered for 4–8 weeks. Once dry, treated pine accepts most exterior timber stains and paints. A penetrating oil-based stain is recommended for best long-term results.
Yes. We also stock Treated Pine Sleeper 200x75x2400, Hardwood Sleeper 200x50x2.4, Hardwood Sleeper 200x75x2400, and Concrete Sleepers. See our full sleeper range for the right product for your project.
