The 200×75 concrete sleeper is the most popular size for residential retaining walls and under-fence plinths across South East Queensland. At 200mm wide and 75mm deep, it provides the structural depth needed for walls holding back genuine soil loads — driveways, garden terracing, sloped boundaries, and raised beds.
Unlike timber sleepers, concrete sleepers don’t rot, warp, split, or attract termites. Once installed correctly with steel H-beam or C-channel posts and proper drainage behind the wall, a concrete sleeper retaining wall needs zero maintenance and will outlast the fence, the garden, and most of the structures on your property.

What Are 200×75 Concrete Sleepers Used For?
The 200×75 size is the standard choice for:
- Retaining walls — stacked horizontally between galvanised steel posts to hold back soil on sloped blocks
- Fence plinths — laid flat under Colorbond or timber fencing to lift panels off the ground, preventing rust and soil contact
- Garden beds — single-course borders for raised vegetable beds and garden terracing
- Under-fence retaining — used on sloping boundaries where one side sits higher than the other
Why Concrete Over Timber?
Treated pine sleepers typically last 15–20 years in ground contact. Hardwood 20–25 years. A quality concrete sleeper retaining wall lasts 50+ years with no replacement, no resealing, and no termite inspections. For investment properties, rentals, and any wall over 1 metre, concrete is the lower-cost option over a 30-year horizon even though it costs more on day one.
Installation Notes
- Posts must be set accurately — standard post centres are 2.06m for a 2.0m sleeper
- Sleepers slot between steel H-beam or C-channel posts concreted into footings
- Always backfill with free-draining gravel and lay a slotted ag pipe at the base — hydrostatic pressure is the number one cause of retaining wall failure
- At 75–85kg per sleeper, a two-person lift is required for walls above ground level
